Google search on SMS
SMS is the single most useful tool and the most abused tool, since mobile phone. Off late SMS space is really heating up. Only recently has Airtel has tied up with Asklaila to power its local search. Google which has launched its group SMS and other features has been quiet for a while. That is unlike Google. It needs action in T20 style. Overseas, Google releases a product or a feature almost every week. But, in India it is a little slow.
Google has come out with another service. It has introduced search via SMS. Unlike, its tie up with Airtel, no GPRS connection is needed. A simple SMS with your search query to 9-77-33-00000 would do. It works on both GSM and CDMA phones
I have tried this feature and the results are quite impressive. The execution speed is amazing. I have never seen a SMS executed that fast. I have sent “bangalore movies” to 97733-00000 and the reply came almost immediately. It has provided me 3 options. Dostana, Quantum of Solace and Varanam Aayiram. Another SMS has to be sent with the option. I have typed 2 and sent it back. It gave me a reply with the rating, movie timings and the address.
Other searches I have tried are :
‘1900 USD in inr’ : 93384.449 (sms result). It tallies perfectly with Google’s web results.
‘dlf stock’ : 224.4 (which is the closing price for DLF this afternoon)
‘GDP of India’ : $4.156trillion(Wow! I did’t know that)
I am beginning to like this nifty tool.I really don’t like sending an SMS, but for this, I will make an exception. Check out google’s SMS website for more details and ideas. Latest news, PNR status, current fact etc… It is only limited by your imagination.
Go check out this feature and use it in needy times or whenever you are bored. Choice is yours.
Oops, I almost forgot the SMS’s are charged as per your plan. Its not the expensive SMS like the indiatimes or other content portal’s offer.
